The project BioTurf has received a positive grant notice and started its work. A consortium consisting of Institut für Textiltechnik of the RWTH Aachen University, Institut für Bodensysteme of the RWTH Aachen University and morton extrusionstechnik GmbH, develop an artificial turf structure made of bio-polyethylene (PE), which differs only little chemically from crude oil-based PE regarding key characteristics.
Several aspects have to be tested for an artificial turf structure. New types of yarns must be developed and validated in order to apply them as an artificial turf structure. These yarns must be woven into a carrier textile, for which a matching product needs to be developed as well. The entire process chain concludes with a PE coating to protect the Turft. BioTurft goes one step further by evaluating the environmental impact as well as the recycling aspect of its product to prove its level of sustainability.
