The 9th TransitionLab Insights Session 2022 on biomaterials and the bioeconomy was held on May 13th, 2022.

Consumer Perception on bio-based Textiles 🌱📢

In Nov 2021, we conducted an online survey asking more than 5,500 people in China, Germany, the UK and the USA about their preferences and expectations for bio-based textiles. The result is a wealth of insights.

In a nutshell:

  • More than half of consumers claim they would buy a bio-based alternative instead of a conventional product
  • Low-sustainable consumers* are hesitant about using bio-based materials (*The 33% of consumers who care least about sustainability.)
  • Over 70% of consumers have concerns or are unsure about the sustainability of bio-based products
  • 1 out of 4 consumers believe bio-based plastics are a useful solution only if they are biodegradable
  • Consumers in the USA tend to only accept comprehensive sustainability solutions (vs. “every small step counts”). Consumers in Germany, the UK, and China are more accepting incremental but frequent steps

Learn more from Marko Madjarac (Full Spectrum Insights) about common motivations across consumer groups and geographies as well as differences in their motivation and behavior and watch the 15-minute presentation here and download the full report here.

THE AMBITION FOR THIS REPORT IS TO PROVIDE A CRITICAL CONSUMER PERSPECTIVE ON BIO-BASED TEXTILES. WE HOPE THAT THE FINDINGS WILL CONTRIBUTE TO MAKING THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY MORE SUSTAINABLE.
